Scams run rampant in today’s car trading industry, especially in light of the heightened use of the internet for making such deals. But the biggest scams that take place these days involve old classic cars for sale. This is largely due to the fact that old classic cars for sale are much harder to find and involve much higher price tags.
You will never be completely protected from scams when dealing with old classic cars for sale. Although you can attempt to be as prepared as possible, scams can and will happen in some cases, regardless of those precautions. However, whether you are a buyer or a seller of old classic cars for sale, there are many things that you can do to attempt to protect yourself against scams.

How to Protect Yourself While Selling Old Classic Cars for Sale
- Only deal with buyers within your country. One of the biggest scams in old classic cars for sale today is people that will contact you and claim to represent a client. They get you to do something that puts you at serious risk, then disclose that they are overseas and will need a "shipper" to come pick up the old classic car for sale. Most often these are scams, where payment falls through after the "shipper" comes to collect your car.
- Get contact information. If the buyer for your old classic cars for sale is not willing to disclose their full name, phone number, and other contact information that can be verified, you are likely dealing with a scam artist. Make sure that you have all reliable contact information before allowing any prospective buyer to test drive or otherwise leave with your old classic cars for sale.
- Only accept cash or personal check. If you accept a personal check, take it to their bank and cash it immediately, before you release the old classic cars for sale to the buyer. Never accept cashiers checks, as they are most often fraudulent. If you need to accept any form of payment other than cash, make sure that the payment has cleared all related financial institutions before releasing the old classic cars for sale.
How to Protect Yourself While Buying Old Classic Cars for Sale
- Do not take a deal that is too good to be true without asking questions. If the asking price is just too low, or the seller wants the old classic cars gone immediately, there is probably something wrong. Check the car over extremely carefully, ask a lot of questions, and keep an eye on your money.
- Investigate. When in doubt of an old classic cars seller, check them out using the internet. You can do an internet search for their company name and uncover information about them as well as the experiences of other customers. You can also check them out over the internet by going to the Better Business Bureau website.
- Make sure that you will get a clear title. Too often sellers of old classic cars for sale do not have a clear title. See the title for yourself. Verify that the name on the title is the name of the person you are buying from. You should also verify that there are no liens on the title. One way to arm yourself with this information is to take the vehicle identification number from the car and contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles for information.
